Travel2Gather's first real trip, and everything we changed after it
In July, our beta group did the thing the app was built for: they planned a full group trip in Travel2Gather, went on it, and came home. Months of testing in living rooms is one thing. A real trip, with real luggage and real group dynamics, is another.
The short version: the core held up. Trips, activities, expenses, and chat all did their jobs. But watching an actual group actually travel taught us more in two weeks than the previous two months of beta feedback combined, and we’ve been shipping revisions ever since.
What the trip taught us
Time zones are where plans go to die. Our biggest lesson was almost embarrassingly simple: when you land somewhere new, “3:00 PM” should mean 3:00 PM where you are. Activities and flights now store their times as destination wall-clock time, so the itinerary reads the way a human plans. No mental math at the gate.
Mid-trip is different from pre-trip. Before departure, you live in the overview. During the trip, you only care about today. The itinerary now opens on the current day while a trip is underway, and an “up next” link jumps you straight to whatever’s coming. Flights got native previews, and activities show at a glance when there are notes attached.
Phones get interrupted constantly. People fill out forms in queues, in cars, at dinner. When the OS killed the app in the background, work vanished. Travel2Gather now restores exactly where you were when you come back, right down to a half-finished activity form.
Money is the sensitive part. Splitting evenly is easy; real groups aren’t even. Expenses now support weighted splits (couples and families scale by headcount), a by-person ledger, and settlement filters, so “who owes whom” is an answer instead of an argument.
Carpools are group logistics too. The driver picker can now include people who aren’t on the app, because someone’s uncle with the van is still part of the plan.
What we’ve added since
Beyond the revisions, the post-trip stretch brought some bigger additions:
- A chat worth staying in: emoji reactions, quoted replies, message editing, photo attachments, and push notifications for new messages.
- Trip bingo: a lightweight game layer for the trip itself, with prompt pools and restartable rounds. It turns out a shared scavenger-bingo card is an excellent way to get everyone taking photos.
- Shared photos, done properly: uploader attribution, a swipe-through full-screen viewer, and automated image moderation behind the scenes.
- Trip start reminders: a nudge at 10:00 in each member’s own time zone as departure approaches.
- Public itinerary sharing: a read-only web view of an itinerary you can send to anyone, no account required. Parents, hosts, and that one friend who refuses to install apps: covered.
What’s next
The beta continues, and the roadmap is still shaped by real trips: shopping lists, todos, flight info, and carpool coordination keep maturing as more groups travel. If you’d like your group to be one of them, head to travel2gather.app. And if you’re already in the beta, thank you. Keep the bug reports coming: support@travel2gather.app.
